Mumbai: Teachers and other officials from state government polytechnic colleges have threatened to go on a ‘tool down’ protest from April 6 if the government doesn’t fulfill their long-pending demands. This means they will not participate in any academic activities of the college and of the government.
However, their decision to resort to strike will affect at least 1.5 lakh students who are to appear for their exams, which are scheduled to start on the same day.
Rajnish Pise, president of the Maharashtra Rajpatrit Adhikari Mahasangh and a teacher with a government polytechnic college in Karad, said that about 800 teachers and college principals will be part of the indefinite strike. “On Saturday, we will protest the government’s apathy towards our demands by wearing black ribbons,” he said.
Pise said their major grouse was that they weren’t being paid according to the sixth pay commission. “We are government employees but we are being denied out rights. We are left with no other option but to strike work,” he said.
Salary is one of their 10 demands, Pise said. “A career advancement scheme is offered to all government employees. But it has been denied to polytechnic teachers for the last five years. Also, the government hasn’t given us promotions for the last 13 years,” he added.
Pise said they have decided to strike work from the day the exam commences to get the authorities’ attention.
